What is the difference between OTT and IPTV?

Difference between OTT and IPTV: Digitization is accelerating worldwide, over 3.8 billion people are already using the Internet. Internet penetration has expanded enormously worldwide in the direction of digital.

Understanding the differences between cable TV, satellite TV, IPTV, and OTT (over-the-top) streaming services can be challenging—even more so as content providers struggle to deliver bundles that blur the line between internet and broadcast media.

The Internet has fundamentally changed many aspects of life, including the television experience, moving away from the now outdated terrestrial television and OTT (Over the Top Technology) and IPTV (Internet Protocol TV).

Main Difference

Network

The network is the primary difference between OTT and IPTV. OTT material is typically delivered over an open network such as the Internet, while IPTV content is generally delivered over a closed, private network such as a LAN or WAN.

OTT works without the need for additional network infrastructure and in many cases does not require changes to existing network configurations. On the other hand, IPTV requires these investments to ensure picture quality without affecting other network activities.

Contents

The second key difference between IPTV and OTT is the material that customers typically consume on both. Apple TV, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon and YouTube are just some of the famous names in OTT.

IPTV is much more comparable to traditional television subscriptions, as it includes live TV broadcasts and premium video-on-demand programs in some situations.

IPTV is ubiquitous when a team needs access to live coverage, whether it’s for financial trading teams or a press room. However, viewers on devices not connected to this network must watch over OTT.

OTT VS IPTV, which is a better service?

OTT is seen as a more flexible and cost-effective solution as it allows customization of services as well as introduction of additional attractive features for the customer at a cheaper price.

It’s a business alternative that can be adapted to a variety of use cases and requires less upfront effort than IPTV to set up. That’s the main reason why OTT services have eaten up a bigger share of the TV market.

On the other hand, IPTV offers a much higher quality of service and more accessible monitoring, management and scalability at the expense of higher operational costs for installing, managing and updating all infrastructure components.

Despite its robustness, innovation cycles are usually slower, affecting the speed of its functioning and its ability to adapt to the latest vision trends.
